I know plenty of
thoughtful Christians of good conscience who are Republicans, Democrats,
Independents, or none of the above. I don’t believe any political party has a
monopoly on piety. But I do believe that our identity as people of faith
supersedes our allegiance to any party or candidate. Polls indicate that nearly 80% of evangelicals will vote for Donald Trump. In fact, they just
might be the ones to carry him to the White House. This concerns me. Not
because he is a Republican, but because his words are so often at odds with the
deepest-held principles of the folks who could well put him in power. I am
unsettled because - to use religious language here - I just don’t see “the
fruit of the Spirit.”
One commentator recently wrote, “Trump has little regard for some of the fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ ― showing love for your neighbor, welcoming the stranger, and asking for God’s forgiveness.“ I’m not saying I’m perfect, or even a moderately decent spiritual example, but I do believe we all must be careful (no matter our political persuasion) not to be seduced into contorting our spiritual convictions in ways that allow us to justify inexcusable words just because they come from someone who is supposedly on “our team.”
I hope you vote your conscience (whoever you vote for) from a thoughtful and informed perspective this November. In that spirit, I’ll be posting periodic quotes from Donald Trump alongside quotes from the Bible. Everyone is welcome to read and comment on my posts, but they’re primarily intended to encourage reflection on the part of those who consider themselves people of religious conviction. I will add no comment to either the Trump quote or the Biblical passage. Draw your own conclusions.
If my posting these words makes you mad, ask yourself why. If you feel the need to defend the Trump quote, please defend the quote on its own merits in light of Scripture. Responding with “Yeah, but Hillary…” is not a defense. It’s simply a redirection. But before you respond at all, I hope you’ll let the words soak in and give them prayerful consideration. I am not seeking to be provocative. I am calling for thoughtful Christian reflection. And remember, God is not a Republican. Or a Democrat. This is not about Partisanship.
UPDATED NOTE: Since launching this series several people have asked why I'm not doing the same experiment with Hillary Clinton. Some have accused me of being unfair and unbalanced. The simple reason she's not the focus is because she's not the one with nearly 80% of evangelical support.
